Imagining the other Side, 1996
Imagining the Other Side was inspired by a quote from Sigmund Freud: "It is indeed impossible to imagine our own death, and whenever we attempt to do so we find we are still present as spectators."
The installation was a series of four interconnected rooms each embodying a different conception of the afterlife. The piece included a performance by soprano Barbara Custer, who moved from room to room through the opening night crowd singing songs from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century that reflected on death.
